Last week on Wednesday, the 26th of January 2011, the LOD2 project team organised a LOD2 meetup at the Belgium ICT department fedict. This meetup was organised in the course of a LOD2 project meeting of Work Package 1 – Requirements, Design and LOD2 Stack Prototype that took place at the office of the LOD2 partner TenForce in Kampenhout, Belgium.
About 35 people came together at the fedict office in Brussels on that afternoon (04.00 pm to 06.00 pm CET) and after 4 short lightning talks the audience was discussing the area of Linked Open Data as well as Open Government Data.
The agenda of the meetup has been as follows:
- Introduction, by Peter Strickx (fedict, Belgium) – slides
- Linked Open Data and the project LOD2, by Sören Auer (University of Leipzig, Germany)
- A comparative census of EU data initiatives, by Martin Kaltenböck (Semantic Web Company Vienna, Austria)
- Legal aspects of Open Government Data, by Jonathan Gray (Open Knowledge Foundation, UK)
- ESCO: A tool to facilitate (online) skills matching throughout Europe, by Henric Stjernquist (DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities of the European Commission)
As an output & result of the meeting the following can be resumed:
- Linked Open Data is a very interesting state-of-the-art technology beside others for data integration and interoperability purposes
- The LOD2 consortium should focus more on showing and providing more concrete examples & use cases what Linked Open Data as a technology can provide (e.g. in the area of Open Government Data)
- There is interesting potential for open data activities in several Belgium departments
- There is a high interest to organise another meetup around the topics Linked Open Data and Open Government Data (~ 95% of the participants pointed out that this should happen)
