Semantics & Media, Mainz – Linked Open Data (LOD) in media, for publishing- and the content industry

On 14th and 15th ofJuly 2011 the Semantics & Media Conference took place in Mainz, Germany at the Johannes Gutenberg University.  The LOD2 team was invited to present the project itsself as well as to hold several talks as follows.

Sören Auer of University of Leipzig, Germany the project lead of LOD2, presented the LOD2 project itsself and gave the audience a 45 minutes introduction into the semantic web – showing and explaining linked (open) data principles and use cases as well as the potentials and benefit of the web of data – he also gave an outreach to the future work of LOD2 and strongly promoted the usage of the LOD2 technology stack that will be launched in September 2011.  You can find the slides on the LOD2 slideshare account.

In a second talk Martin Kaltenböck from the Semantic Web Company, Austria presented the idea of open (government) data, explained the way from open data to linked open data  and pointed out the enourmous potentials of open data for the economy as wel as the media, publishing and content industry in detail – he gave best practise examples from BBC over New York Times to The Guardian as well as Wolters Kluwer Germany as one of the 3 use case partners in LOD2. He furthermore pointed out that linked open data as well as meta data management is KEY for new innovative business models in the content industry and showcased several demos of linked open data in use. You can find the slides on the respective slideshare account.

As a third talk by the LOD2 consortium Christian Dirschl of Wolters Kluwer Germany presented the linked (open) data in media use case of LOD2 – he pointed out the new paradigm of publishing and data integration using linked open data principles and technologies that will be implemented in the course of the Wolters Kluwer LOD2 use case and presented an example system architecture for publishers as well as the the changes in processes that will be necessary to enable this new publishing and data integration paradigm. See slides here.

The audience – about 50 participants mainly from the German media and publishing industry – was highly interested in the linked open data principles and technologies – in the potentials, opportunities and benefits and involved the LOD2 experts in interesting discussions about linked open data issues in the field of data provenance, possibilities of LOD visualisation and Return on Investment (ROI) issues when switching from current methods and technologies to new linked open data ones.

Beside the above mentioned LOD2 team member presentations there were interesting talks by Andre Klahold of University of Siegen about ‘text analysis in editorial context’, by Peter Altendorf and Rico Zimmermann of Institute for Rundfunktechnik about ‘meta data for media production’ (who presented beside others the ‘broadcast meta data exchange format’ available in XML format (not RDF yet but this is in discussion) as a harmonised metadata standard for media (mainly TV & radio) , see wikipedia article) furthermore by Christine Madsen of Oxford Internet Institute about ‘A perfect fit? The use of linked data in the Humanities’, Jörg Siebert of ZDF and and Hartwig Laute from the US-German company Recommind about ‘enabling modern newspaper archives’ and last but not least by Christian Ehrlich of Ontos about ‘Semantic Web for Media Companies’.

Every day of the conference ended with a short panel discussion and a wrap up by the organiser Christoph Bläsi of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

The Semantics & Media Conference Mainz showed that semantic technologies as well as linked open data has already reached the (German) media, publishing and content industry – and that this industry sees a strong opportunity in these technologies as an enabler for strongly needed new business models in the area of: data & content integration, data & content enrichment & population, innovative browse & search mechanisms, new publishing opportunities, content categorisation and trend analysis, new editorial processes and/or possibilities of businesses in the meta data field.
